How to Plan a Catholic Wedding Timeline

Planning a Catholic wedding day is unlike any other — it’s deeply meaningful, rooted in tradition, and centered around the sacrament of marriage.
As a Minnesota wedding photographer who specializes in Catholic wedding days, one of the most common questions I get is:
“How do we actually plan our timeline around the Mass?”
If you’re feeling unsure where to start, you’re not alone. This guide will walk you through exactly how to create a timeline that feels peaceful, intentional, and stress-free — while still allowing space for beautiful, meaningful photos

Understanding a Catholic Wedding Mass Timeline
A full Catholic Nuptial Mass typically lasts:
60–75 minutes (sometimes up to 90 minutes)
This includes:
Liturgy of the Word
Exchange of vows
Liturgy of the Eucharist
Communion
Because the ceremony itself is longer than most weddings, your timeline needs to be built around the Mass — not squeezed in between things.
Step 1: Confirm Your Ceremony Time
In many Minnesota parishes, weddings are often scheduled at:
1:00 PM
2:00 PM
3:00 PM
Churches often have strict time blocks, so this will be your anchor for the entire day.
Once your ceremony time is confirmed, everything else flows from there.
Step 2: Decide on a First Look (or Not)
This is one of the biggest timeline decisions you’ll make.
Option 1: First Look (Before Ceremony)
Pros:
More relaxed timeline
Majority of photos done early
More time together on your wedding day
Typical flow:
Getting ready
First look
Couple portraits
Wedding party photos
Family photos (partial)
Option 2: No First Look
Pros:
Traditional experience
Emotional aisle moment
Things to plan for:
All portraits happen after Mass
Timeline will feel tighter
You’ll need buffer time before reception
Step 3: Build in Time for Photos
Catholic weddings are full of beautiful, sacred moments, but your timeline needs to intentionally allow time to capture them.
Ideal Photo Timing
Before Ceremony (with first look):
Getting ready: 60–90 minutes
First look + couple portraits: 30–45 minutes
Wedding party: 30 minutes
Family (partial): 20 minutes
After Ceremony:
Family photos: 20–30 minutes
Couple portraits (if needed): 15–30 minutes
Photographer Tip:
The best Catholic wedding galleries include both:✔ the sacred moments inside the church✔ intentional portraits outside or at a second location
Step 4: Plan for Travel (Minnesota Specific)
In Minnesota, it’s very common to have:
Ceremony at a church
Reception at a separate venue
Always plan for:
20–45 minutes travel time
Extra buffer for traffic + parking
Pro Tip:
If your reception is far from your church, consider:
doing couple portraits at a scenic location in between(like parks, rivers, or overlooks)
Step 5: Keep Family Photos Organized
Family photos can quickly become stressful if not planned well.
✔ Best Practice:
Create a pre-written list:
Immediate family first
Extended family second
Assign a family member or personal attendant to help gather people
Timing:
20–30 minutes max
Step 6: Don’t Skip Sunset Photos
Even with a full timeline, this is one of the most important moments of the day.
Why it matters:
Soft, flattering light
Quiet moment together
Some of your most emotional images
Timing:
10–15 minutes during golden hour
Example Catholic Wedding Timeline (Minnesota)
Here’s a simple example with a 2:00 PM Mass:
11:30 AM – Getting ready photos
12:45 PM – First look
1:00 PM – Couple + wedding party photos
1:40 PM – Hide before the ceremony
2:00 PM – Catholic Mass begins
3:15 PM – Ceremony ends
3:20 PM – Family photos
4:00 PM – Travel to reception
5:00 PM – Grand entrance
7:30 PM – Sunset portraits
10:00 PM – End of coverage
Final Thoughts
Your wedding day should not feel rushed or overwhelming.
A well-planned Catholic wedding timeline allows you to:
✔ be fully present
✔ honor the Mass
✔ experience each moment intentionally
And when your timeline is built with care, your photos will reflect that — peaceful, meaningful, and true to your day
